Value is something different than values. Here are five dimensions that give firm shape to the concept of value.
V = Valuable
Something is valuable when it has worth or meaning to someone. That judgement is subjective. What one person finds valuable might hold little significance for another. The same element of value can be interpreted differently across people, teams, or times.
A = Agency
Value connects to action that a person takes. They can claim, contribute, or create/co-create value. Agency matters because value is not just received; it is also generated through individual priorities, choices and effort.
L = Landscape
Context shapes value. What is valuable depends on the landscape in which it sits, such as a person’s life stage, a team’s situation, or an organisation’s environment. The same value element can hold high value in one landscape and none in another.
U = Utility
Potential value becomes real only when it is used. A tool, process, or insight has value in practice when it delivers benefit or meaning through action.
E = Evolving
Value is never static. It can change, combine, or develop over time. What matters today might grow into something else tomorrow, or become a step towards a new form of value.
